We learn who they are through specifics: Elias's habit of physically placing himself between his friends and anything that moves too fast toward them. Iris cataloguing exit routes from every space she enters without realising she's doing it. Liam mediating every minor friction between the others with practiced ease. Maya feeding the last of her chips to a stray dog and being quietly delighted when it follows them for twenty minutes. On the way home, Maya mentions she looked up bakeries in Paris, and it takes three years to learn baking properly. "So we should probably start soon." Nobody disagrees. Simon, walking slightly ahead, says nothing. His EBand buzzes once. He silences it without looking, and sighs.
